Gas Safe Registration: What You Need to Know

Any plumbing work that connects to gas appliances must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here's what that means for you.

What is the Gas Safe Register?

The Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas appliances in the UK. It replaced CORGI in 2009 and is the only registration body recognised by law.

Why does it matter for water softener installation?

If your water softener connects to a combi boiler or any gas-fed hot water system, the pipework modifications must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Working on gas supply pipework without registration is illegal.

How to verify a plumber's registration

Every Gas Safe registered engineer carries an ID card with a unique licence number. You can verify any engineer on the Gas Safe Register website by entering their licence number or business name. Always ask to see the card before work begins.

What does the law say about unregistered gas work?

Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, it is illegal for anyone not on the Gas Safe Register to carry out gas work. Unregistered work is dangerous, invalidates your home insurance, and can result in prosecution.
